Human MCP-1 also known as monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 or CCL2 is a small cytokine that belongs to the CC chemokine family. This protein with a molecular mass of approximately 13 kDa is a monomeric polypeptide. It is produced in endothelial cells, smooth muscle cells, and monocytes in response to inflammatory stimuli. MCP-1 functions as a chemotactic factor that attracts monocytes and basophils but not neutrophils or eosinophils to sites of inflammation. It has been implicated in the pathogenesis of diseases characterized by monocytic infiltrates, such as psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis, and atherosclerosis. Protein function: Acts as a ligand for C-C chemokine receptor CCR2 (PubMed:10529171, PubMed:10587439, PubMed:9837883). Signals through binding and activation of CCR2 and induces a strong chemotactic response and mobilization of intracellular calcium ions (PubMed:10587439, PubMed:9837883).
