Product Description: p-Tau231 is a biomarker used to detect incipient Alzheimer's disease pathology. It is a phosphorylated form of tau protein, which is primarily localized in neurons of the central nervous system and is involved in microtubule stabilization. Tau elevation is observed in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of patients with neurodegenerative disease and severe head injuries, suggesting its extracellular release during neuronal damage and a role as a biomarker with specificity for brain injury. In Alzheimer's disease and related neurodegenerative diseases, including chronic traumatic encephalopathy, tau is abnormally phosphorylated and aggregated into bundles of filaments. P-Tau231 has been shown to differentiate Alzheimer's disease from healthy controls and can identify patients with AD and differentiate them from amyloid-beta negative cognitively unimpaired older adults. It is a promising novel biomarker of emerging AD pathology with the potential to facilitate clinical trials. Protein Function: Promotes microtubule assembly and stability, and might be involved in the establishment and maintenance of neuronal polarity (PubMed:21985311). The C-terminus binds axonal microtubules while the N-terminus binds neural plasma membrane components, suggesting that tau functions as a linker protein between both (PubMed:21985311, PubMed:32961270). Axonal polarity is predetermined by TAU/MAPT localization (in the neuronal cell) in the domain of the cell body defined by the centrosome.
