Product Description: Interleukin-18 (IL-18) is a pro-inflammatory cytokine that plays a crucial role in various inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. IL-18 is involved in the regulation of both Th1 and Th2 immune responses, and its activity is balanced by the presence of IL-18 binding protein (IL-18BP). Elevated levels of IL-18 have been associated with several autoimmune and inflammatory conditions, including rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, inflammatory bowel disease, and macrophage activation syndrome. In these diseases, an imbalance between IL-18 and IL-18BP can lead to increased levels of free IL-18, which is more important for determining disease severity. IL-18 has also been implicated in heart disease, acute kidney injury, and neurological disorders such as cognitive impairment and agitation in severe mental illness. Protein Function: Pro-inflammatory cytokine primarily involved in epithelial barrier repair, polarized T-helper 1 (Th1) cell and natural killer (NK) cell immune responses (PubMed:10653850).
