Encoded by the FGFBP1 gene in humans, this protein plays a crucial role in cell proliferation and other processes such as skin carcinogenesis and inflammation. FGFBP1 interacts with various FGFs, including FGF1 and FGF2, as well as with perlecan, a heparan sulfate proteoglycan. This protein acts as a chaperone, releasing FGFs from the extracellular matrix storage and presenting them to their cognate receptors, thereby increasing their mitogenic activity.
