It is an antibiotic from Streptomyces hygrosxopicus. It is a preferential translation inhibitor in virus-infected cells. The inhibition of protein synthesis is a consequence of a complex formation of the antibiotic with the ribosomal sub unit of the 70S ribosome that induces a localized conformational change.
