Cytokeratin 20 (CK20) is expressed in enterocytes and goblet cells of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. It is also expressed in specific types of simple epithelial cells of the urinary tract. CK20 is useful marker of colorectal carcinoma, gastric, pancreas, urothelium, merkel and biliary system carcinomas. Control: Appendix, colon. Protein function: Plays a significant role in maintaining keratin filament organization in intestinal epithelia. When phosphorylated, plays a role in the secretion of mucin in the small intestine.
